Crowley Maritime Corp. announces the recent launch the Ocean Wave, the first of four Ocean Class tugboats under construction at Bollinger Shipyards in Amelia, La. The Ocean Wave and Ocean Wind are classed as Dynamic Positioning 1 (DP1) tugboats and are twin-screw, steel-hulled tugs with an overall length of 146 ft, beam of 46 ft, hull depth of 25 ft and design draft of 21 ft. The second two tugs of the class, Ocean Sky and Ocean Sun, will be classed as DP2 and will be 10 feet longer.

The new tugs will be ideally suited to work with Crowley’s new 455-series heavy lift deck barges, which measure 400 feet by 105 feet and offer increased stability for loads up to 4,200 pounds per square foot. Additionally, the tugs will be outfitted for, and capable of, rig moves, platform and Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit tows, emergency response and firefighting. Jensen-Designed Work Boat for Port of Milwaukee Delivered

Great Lakes Shipyard (Cleveland, OH) completed construction of a Jensen-designed 60-foot work boat for the Port of Milwaukee. The vessel sailed from Cleveland and was delivered to the port on Tuesday.

The vessel was designed by Jensen, a Crowley Maritime Corp. company based in Seattle, Wash., to include general harbor work, icebreaking, salvage, and dive operation capabilities.  The workboat is equipped with a DMW Telescopic Boom Marine crane; it also has specialized lighting and equipment for harbor security work. The workboat is powered by a single 405 HP Cummins QSK11 Tier II diesel engine and has a maximum speed of 10 knots.

Great Lakes Shipyard was awarded the contract by the city in June 2011.

INDONESIA SENIOR MARITIME OFFICIAL VISITS SINGAPORE UNDER THE DISTINGUISHED VISITORS PROGRAMME

Singapore played host to Mr. Leon Muhamad, Director General, Directorate General of Sea Transportation (DGST), Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia under the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore’s (MPA) Distinguished Visitors Programme (DVP) from 19 to 20 January 2012.

Established in 1997, the DVP aims to engage senior maritime personalities who are prime movers and key opinion makers in the international maritime community. The DVP focuses on establishing and boosting good and long-lasting relations with these personalities and their organisations, as well as to strengthen bilateral maritime relations.
In his career of more than 20 years with Indonesia’s key maritime regulatory bodies, Mr. Leon has served as Head of Port Administration Office in various parts of Indonesia including Jakarta, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan and East Java, before assuming the positions of Director of Sea Traffic and Secretary of DGST. In July 2011, he took over as the Director General of DGST. DGST and MPA share a long history of close cooperation in various maritime areas, including maintaining and enhancing safety of navigation in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, and maritime training and education. The world’s busiest port is contested by several ports around the world, as there is as yet no standardised means of evaluating port performance and traffic. For the past decade, the distinction has been claimed by both the Port of Rotterdam and the Port of Singapore. The former based its measurement on cargo tonnage handled (total weight of goods loaded and discharged), while the latter ranked in terms of shipping tonnage handled (total volume of ships handled). Since 2005, the Port of Shanghai has exceeded both ports to take the title in terms of total cargo tonnage.[1][2][3]

Astoria, Ore. — The U.S. Coast Guard announced last week the release of its Top 10 video compilation for 2011, highlighting the year’s most compelling cases from the work done every day by America’s Coast Guard.

Two videos from Pacific Northwest units, Air Station Astoria, Ore., and Cutter Henry Blake, homeported in Everett, Wash., were selected to participate in the “Coast Guard 2011 Video of the Year” contest.

The Coast Guard invites the public to participate in the 2011 Video of the Year contest by voting for their favorite video.

High Speed Ferry and Merchant Freighter Collide in Straits of Gibraltar

13th January 2012.

The 189 meter long, 48193 dwt freighter New Glory collided with the 97 meter long, 758 dwt ro-ro ferry Milenium Dos near Ceuta, Spain.   The New Glory struck the starboard side of the Milenium Dos who was proceeding north with 174 passengers and 18 crew.  The collision left a large hole in the ferry’s hull above the waterline.  One of the Milenium Dos fuel tanks was damaged and some fuel was released into the water.  Two passengers and one crewman were injured and were taken to hospital.   The two vessels remained locked together as authorities dispatched rescue craft and tugs to the scene.   The two vessel remained together for several hours until they could be pulled apart.  The Milenium Dos was taken under tow by the tugs and proceeded to Ceuta.   The New Glory proceeeded to an anchorage.   No reports of injuries on the freighter.   Authorities are conducting an investigation into the incident.

International Longshoremen’s Association To Hold Informational Rally at Global Terminals This Friday, January 6th In Bayonne, New Jersey To Protect “Good Paying Jobs” in Port.

NORTH BERGEN, NJ – ILA Locals in the Port of New York and New Jersey plan a noon-time rally on Friday, January 6th, 2012 outside the offices of Global Terminals, 302 Port Jersey Boulevard, Jersey City, New Jersey to promote keeping good-paying jobs in this Port.  The ILA will address growing concerns over terminal management wanting to implement new technology that will reduce ILA employment in the coming years.

ILA International and District officers will participate in the rally and have invited ILA members who are on their lunch breaks at Global Terminals or those not working on Friday to join them to demonstrate solidarity as the ILA prepares to begin negotiations on a new Master Contract sometime in the coming months.  The current Master Contract expires on September 30, 2012.

The ILA is instructing all its members not want to interfere with working operations at Global Terminals and for members to work their assigned hours on Friday.
