Each year, an estimated 10,000 shipping containers fall off container ships at sea. Although many of these containers float at the surface for months, most eventually sink to the seafloor. No one knows what happens to these containers once they reach the deep seafloor.

From March 8 to March 10, 2011, a team of researchers from MBARI and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) will use a robotic submarine to study the biological impacts of a shipping container resting on the seafloor about 20 kilometers (12 miles) outside of Monterey Bay (but still within the boundaries of the sanctuary).

MBARI researchers first discovered this lost container at a depth of about 1,300 meters (4,200 feet) during a marine biology dive in June 2004. Video from MBARI’s submersible clearly showed serial numbers on the side of this container. Sanctuary staff sent these numbers to the U.S. customs agency, which was able to identify the ship that had originally carried the container. Read More…

BG Group and Tokyo Gas sign 20-year LNG sales contract

BG Group today signed a sales agreement with Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. (“Tokyo Gas”), concluding negotiations announced in March 2010 for the supply of 1.2 million tonnes of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) a year for 20 years from 2015.

Under the agreement, Tokyo Gas will be supplied with LNG from the Queensland Curtis LNG (“QCLNG”) facility on Curtis Island, near Gladstone in Queensland, Australia, and from the Group’s global LNG portfolio. Read More…

South Korea’s, Hyundai Heavy Industries, the world’s largest shipbuilder, has won a $400 million order to build two 155,000 cu.m LNG carriers for Singapore-based BW Maritime.

Mr. Kim Oi-hyun, senior executive vice president and CEO of Hyundai Heavy and Mr. Clarence Lui, BW Maritime CFO & executive vice president, signed the contract,  which also includes an option to build two same class LNG ships.

The membrane-type LNG carriers, measuring 228 m in length, 44.2 m in width and 26 m in depth, are scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2014 and the first half of 2015. They will feature the Dual Fuel Diesel Engine System (DFDE), allowing them to operate on oil fuel or natural gas.

Hyundai Heavy has won eight LNG carrier orders (including two received by its affiliated company, Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries) and two LNG-FSRU (floating storage regasification unit) orders this year.

President Patil reviews naval fleet, calls for safeguarding maritime borders (Update)

Mumbai, Dec 20 (ANI): President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, who reviewed the naval fleet of the country, today said the safeguarding of the maritime borders is a major requirement for the socio-economic well being of the nation.

Asserting that India is a maritime nation, with significant maritime interests, President Patil in her speech during the review of the naval fleet said: ” A preponderant proportion of our overseas trade is through the sea routes.

Our nation is surrounded by water bodies on three sides. This gives us an inherent geographical advantage, but it also poses numerous security challenges. Safeguarding of our maritime borders is a major requirement for the social and economic well being of our country.
